Hi all,
So the semester is coming to an end. I am teaching my last fall class (Photo 2 digital) at ICP tomorrow - can't wait to see my dear students' final projects!
Before I jump on the plane with my little family, I wanted to share my most recent shoot with you.

I was assigned by Avram Rusu Interiors to shoot a room in a beautiful mansion in New York that Andrea (the designer) entirely created for the Holiday Homes charity project. It was a high-end, spectacular show.

I spent 2 days there for the architecture shots and a few extra hours to make portraits of the designer. She had brought 3 outfits but I realized that one of her dresses made her look particularly fabulous and decided to go with this one only but in 3 different settings to give it a different mood.

For the first shot, I went traditional - Vanityfairesque

For the second shot I wanted something fun, 30’s, almost flirty

For the 3^rd one, I chose a darker “in the mood for love” twist

Which one do you like best?

For the geeks, a few details: I was shooting with my D700 tethered to a Mac Pro. I had 3 sets of lenses: a 24mm, a 50mm, an 85mm. I also had a flash and a few diffusers and reflectors.

And for those who are still with me, my favorite is the second shot. Off course, the first portrait makes the strongest statement, but I personally like the easiness and lightness of the second. It is soft and chic. Just what I would like to feel from someone who is going to design my home!

I will be back in 2012 with new photo stories!

Very roughly, here is what's coming up in the following month at stephaniederouge.com:
My precious intern Amy and I are putting the final touches to the publishing of my first Iphone photography book - Coming soon!
I am currently working on a NEW "In Your" series that I will hopefully be able to present in the spring!!
I am ready to shoot the winter collection of the On Your Roof series, just waiting for the rain to stop and the snow to come!
Last but not least, as some of you may know I have now been a mum for a year and it has given me a great opportunity to look at the world differently and find new photography ideas. Here are a few images of an (other) ongoing project: From The Stroller.

News - On your Roof - Fall 2011

This fall, New York was shaken by an earthquake, a hurricane (Irene) but also by the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
Time flies and sometimes for the best.
That Sunday felt like a final touch: a last glance behind, a last tear and prayer and a strong move forward.
For that occasion, I was contacted by Didier de Fays of photographie.com to cover the event for his Magazine 24h. The concept is too assign 12 photographers around the planet to shoot one single event for 24h. The 2011 subject was off course "9/11 - 10 years after" and I was lucky enough to be asked to shoot what I know best: rooftops!
I spent 24h hours meeting new yorkers who had witnessed the tragedy from their rooftops 10 years ago and accepted to go back there with me and share their stories. It was an incredibly reach and warm experience (exhausting too!). Thanks to everyone who participated and helped me build this unique rooftop story.

What's next?
I can't wait for the snow to fall to go and shoot snowmen!
This is ungoing project that I am shooting exclusively in the 5 borrows of New York. I am looking into making a book from the large collection of rooftop images that I gathered in 3 years.

News - In Your Fridge - Fall 2011

Hey all,

Better later than never, here is an update on what happened this end if summer / fall.

Despite of the heat, summer and fall seem to be the "In Your Fridge" month!
As you know, it all started with a feature in the fantastic trend blog fubiz.net
In the folowing weeks, I had thousands of visits on my website everyday, hundreds of emails from all over the world and even a few phone calls and pokes on my husband's facebook :)
After Le monde Magazine, the project was featured in Io donna, Elle Korea, Le Devoir, Le Point, Privileges and many others. There are more coming up in the following month...
It was also exhibited in Le Bon Marche in Paris and is now part of the exhibition "A table" in Bruxelles, Belgium.
I was also lucky enough to be able to share my experience as a photographer and teacher on Radio Canada (Histoires d'objets and C'est ca la vie!), Zoom Magazine, Samsung Magazine and Better Photography Magazine.

- My favorite question (by phone): "Stephanie, can you get up from your desk, open your fridge and describe what is inside for me?"

My answer: "Vegetable, cheese, yogurt, juice, foie gras, jam, all king of sauces, baby bottles, chocolate and candies from my country, perfume and lipstick, old Polaroid film and a post-it for my man saying "don't eat my soup!"

- My favorite comments:
"After reading / hearing / seeing about your project, I went directly to my fridge, opened it and looked inside... for the first time..."
"After the show, everyone in the building was talking about the fridge experience - as if they had discovered an unknown planet in their appartment."

What's next?:
I am looking for a space for an installation and planning on shooting more fridges during my walks in and out of town.
I will off course keep you posted on all this and post new pictures soon!

Overwhelming spring

Hi all,

Sorry I have been out of touch for so long but work has been pretty crazy lately...
Yesterday was the first day of summer (really? Already?), I realized that before I fly to Europe, I owe you a little summary of what happened in the past days / weeks / almost months.

The IN YOUR FRIDGE project, was noticed by fubiz.fr (new trends french blog) earlier this June and has been traveling the world since. Paper magazine or web publications in the US, France, Mexico, Japan, Russia, Canada, brazil, Taiwan, Germany...
I just wish I could fly to all these countries to continue the project... Wait and see...
I also received tons of emails of congratulations and some big fans even sent me pictures of their fridges!!!

I have also been looking for a corridor gallery space in NY and Paris for a fancy installation that I want to create with that project... More news on this very soon.

A few weeks ago, I was was lucky enough to be invited to participate to the WA auction for Japan at the 25CPW galery in New York. It was a very beautiful and successful event. Architecture for Humanity is now rebuilding houses in Japan with the benefits of the auction. This is the print I gave to the auction from my fadten seat belts project.

Hello all!

So it is this time of the year again... When I will be running and shooting between earth and skies on New Yorkers rooftops.
And for this season again, I NEED YOUR HELP!

For those who don't know the RTS yet, the concept is simply documenting New Yorkers' life and activity on their rooftops... I shoot wherever people welcome me, in the 5 boroughs and at any time of day or night... The shoot never takes more than half an hour, and each rooftop owner gets a signed print at the end of the season.

So, PLEASE email me if you have a friend who cooks / reads / sings / dances / loves / meditates / contemplates / creates... on his roof, call me when you go to a rooftop party, text me if you see an amazing rooftop from your window... (I have a giant print of my phone number (true) that I can use to attract attention...)

Thanks so much for your help, this is a very important project for me, The images from the past seasons have been published and exhibited widely and I am hoping to publish a book soon...
For those of you who travel this summer, after the prestigious exhibition at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France in Paris in 2010, the Rooftop Stories will be exhibited in Le Bon Marche in Paris from June to August 2011.

She is now back on earth with another supersize challenge: painting the floors of Times Square. Here is where the work is at so far. See the completed work around mid-August!!

Rooftop or Terrace?

Tanveer and Kelly are one of theses beautiful friends of friends of friends of friends (thanks Laura) who are immediately excited by my ROOFTOP STORIES and really make thing move to be part of the project... The kind of people who make Brooklyn so very special.
So one day, Tanveer shot me an email saying: "Our garden has started to produce, so it's time for a harvest-themed last minute BBQ of sorts".
when I got there, not only were there tons of happy people eating home made pizza (with vegetables form the garden!) and delicious marinated and BBQd lamb, but Kelly took time to show me her rather big and impressive "rooftop" garden... Big eggplants, peppers of all sorts, tiny wild strawberries and even REAL yummy looking tomatoes :)

Things were going really well when my heart sunk... I realized that this gorgeous place was a terrace... not a real rooftop... Could I include it in the project?
It has been a problem all along, to be sure to be on the top of a building and not on someone's balcony or terrace...
Technically, this party was on top of a store but not of their building... Ouch, I guess I have to start a terrace project?
On the other hand, I was shooting from a proper rooftop... And I have to say I love the final pic.
What do you blog readers think?? should I include it in the ROOFTOP STORIES 2010?

Whatever happens at the end, I thought the sweet adventure that evening was worth sharing.

On the technical side:
I got there just in time for the more subtle end of afternoon light but got myself caught in talking with people and enjoying the party as if I was a guest...
I almost forgot that at this height the sky always looks clear because nothing blocks the light. In fact at that time, and even if your eyes tell you otherwise, the light has a dark aspect to it that makes it more difficult for the camera to capture. Be careful if you are not using a tripod... that's why I don't even have a good portrait of amazing cook Tanveer to show here... Bad, bad timing!

Triple rooftop shooting!

Last Wednesday night, I had a very "New York" moment and I want to share it with you.
So my friend artist Nicole Kenney accepted to draw me for a personal project of mine, and she needed to take some reference pictures before she got to her drawing desk. She knows my work and decided that she wanted a picture of me shooting on a rooftop.
When she came in, we decided to go up to my rooftop, taking her and my man as supermodels and fake a shoot...
But in fact we really didn't have to...
First of all because I thought Nicole was quite cute in her red dress shooting around the rooftop so I decided SHE would be my subject of the day while I or the guys were HER subject... Still following?
But also because on the rooftop were 4 very charming and pretty drunk men celebrating the world cup by playing a little rooftop soccer game... They accepted to be part of this multiple shooting session and so we all clicked for a while... Until the soccer ball went over the wall...
GOAL!

On the technical side: a very dark rooftop against a quickly changing sky. From up there you think it is still bright when in fact the sunset light surrounding your models is pretty poor, shoot quickly! then drink a beer.
One good point, a roof with an almost 360 degrees view so you can take different shots at different angles to diversify...

My friend Molly Dilworth (whom I met painting a rooftop) is part of the Green Light for Midtown project. Her winning proposal for “Cool Water, Hot Island” is based on NASA’s infrared heat data of Manhattan. It will be seen in Times Square, New York for 18 month. she started the painting process today and I was lucky enough to be there... more on that project soon...

4th of July rooftop shoot ...

It was so hot in the city last Saturday that many afternoon rooftop parties were canceled... Even the rooftop pool party that I had been looking forward to...Off course, with 100 degrees, and unless you wanted to end up like a roasted chicken, you were better off napping under your AC... But I am more stubborn than a fried chicken and tried my way on over bright silver roofs or boiling black tops. A journey in hell... Even though I was covered with sunscreen and had a hat all day, I still got a lobster style 4th of July tan...

On the technical side, and this is for my dear students at ICP, it ended up being very tricky:
Concerning brightness, and even though I was using the lowest ISO possible (Nikon = 200), all the highlights ended up completely burnt... For the first time I had to actually experiment with the L0.3 / L0.7 / L1.0 options of under-exposition... I have to say it worked pretty well. but I also chose to go over exposed, just for fun... and loved it even better!
In terms of heat, I learned another trick: those big bulky cameras (Nikon D700) are actually quite solid and resist this kind of heat and even the inconveniences that come with like the drops of sweat coming directly from my face into the camera for example... Which is not always the case of smaller cameras who tend to take an unexpected nap at the wrong moment. Heat? sweat? A little of both I think. I read somewhere that some photographers drowned their cameras with sweat on very hot days and very long shoots... Weird but true... not very glamourous but (very) good to know...

Up in the air above Central Park

On June 5th, I was invited by designer Camille Pascal to come and shoot the launch of her new line on an amazing rooftop space in Upper East Side. The day was particularly hot and aggressively bright... A photographer's nightmare...
When I got up there I discovered a 3 space roof with fantastic views of Central Park, and a very chic urban gathering of fashion lovers.
I won't talk about the (gorgeous) dresses since it is not my field but about the technical difficulties of this particular shoot.
The light. At this point of brightness, the sun erases all the details of the sky but also of the skyline... My picture talk about the space above NYC... the skyes... Intense Bracketing mandatory!
The wind. you just have to go hand held (even my big tripod was not strong enough) and take twice as much pictures as you would usually do as to get a chance to see people's faces behind their flying hair.
The space. This situation was tricky because each of the 3 spaces were pretty small compared to the flat immense rooftops that I usually shoot. I made it more about the people and the view than about the space itself.

Evening rooftop shooting in Bushwick

I have been shooting what New Yorkers do on their rooftops for 2 summers. I am now severely addicted to this very particular space between earth and sky. The air, the silence and the immense skies that gives you the impression that nothing really matters, that everything is still possible... Even spending the rest of your life seating and staring up there becomes an option...

I thought I would share with you the poetic joys and technical difficulties of my rooftop shoots...

Last Saturday night, I was invited by Benn Rasmussen for the rooftop show 'As Long As We Endure' by the company Ephemerui during the Bushwhick Open Studios.
I was not sure what to expect but I have to say the experience was quite fascinating. I almost forgot to shoot...

Technically speaking it is always a challenge because of the very high contrast between the sky and the rooftop especially when the roof is silver. It can also be overwhelmingly hot up there. Usually I use a tripod to avoid shaking because of the strong wnds and to be able to bracket. That night I found an amazing point of view from above (always difficult to find on a roof) on a ladder so I had to do without tripod until it became to tricky because of the su going down.

I hope you will enjoy those pictures...
